Movie Fights: Sope Dirisu (Gangs of London) Against the Armenian Mobsters
November 22, 2024
I just started watching a TV show on Netflix called Gangs of London . I’m a fan of Joe Cole (really great in Peaky Blinders and The Ipcress File ) who stars, but at the end of the show, suddenly I found myself watching a rally badass martial arts movie (there is an ultra-violent bar fight involving a character named Carter, played by Sope Dirisu ). I have been looking in vain for good martial arts movies lately without much luck. They are all John Wick knockoffs. John Wick movies are great, yet also somehow tiring. How many fights can you watch in a row. There has to be emotional content so you care about the characters (IMO). Plus, while the first John Wick was a ground-breaking film in terms of its stunt work and mix of guns and hand-to-hand, you see it done over and over now. Why was the first Bourne Identity so great? Because when he started fighting, it was in the context of good acting, great direction, and excellent practical (somewhat amped up) choreography.
How is it that the fight in this movie about British mobs was so good? I looked behind the curtain and found Gareth Evans . He produced the show and directed the episode I was watching. PS he directed The Raid movies with Iko Uwais .
